Week One Down: How To Keep The Screen Free Momentum Going
One week into the holiday, some days went well, some didn’t. Here’s how to reflect honestly, spot the common week one wobbles, and reset gently for week two.
One week into the holiday. Give yourself a moment to exhale.
If the first few days felt shaky, you are not alone.
One mum in our community messaged us on day three saying, I nearly gave up and just handed her the iPad. Then, by day six, she wrote back, She actually asked to play whot with her brother today instead.
That is exactly how this works. It rarely feels like progress in the moment. It only looks like progress when you glance back.
So let us glance back together. Here is how to check in with yourself, and your children, at the end of week one.
Ask Yourself These Three Questions
1. What actually worked?
Maybe it was the boredom basket. Maybe it was letting them help in the kitchen. Maybe it was simply sending them outside to play with the neighbour's children while you supervised from the veranda.
Whatever worked, note it.
Not in your head, actually write it down or save it as a voice note.
You will want to remember it in week three when energy starts to dip.
2. What was harder than expected?
Perhaps the afternoons were the hardest stretch, the hours between lunch and evening when everyone is tired and the house feels warm and restless.
Naming the hard part is not admitting failure. It is gathering information so you can plan around it next week.
3. Did the children push back, and how did I respond?
Some pushback is normal and expected. What matters is how it was handled.
Did you cave every time, or did you hold the line gently while still showing warmth? There is no perfect score here. Just honest reflection.
Common Week One Wobbles, And What To Do About Them
The "I'm bored" loop returns
This usually means the boredom basket needs refreshing, or the anchor activity has become too predictable.
Rotate in something new, even something as small as a different game or a new location for outdoor play. Our Age By Age Guide To Screen Free Fun is a good place to find a fresh idea for your child's age group.
Screen requests increase toward the weekend
Weekends often feel less structured than weekdays, especially if there is no lesson teacher or planned activity.
Build in one small weekend anchor, a family outing, a visit to relatives, or a cousins' playdate.
You are more tired than you expected
Keeping children engaged without a screen takes more of your presence, and that is real. This is where extended family and community help matter. Can an aunty, older cousin, or neighbour take a shift this week?
A Simple Reset For Week Two
You do not need to overhaul anything. Small adjustments carry more weight than a dramatic restart.
Try this:
- Pick one new screen free activity to introduce this week
- Choose one thing from week one that worked, and repeat it deliberately
- Involve your child in choosing at least one activity for the week ahead, this builds their buy in
A Word On Grace
If there were days this week when the TV stayed on longer than planned, or a tablet made an appearance because you needed thirty quiet minutes to finish something urgent, that is not a failure. That is real life in a Nigerian home, with work calls, market runs, and everything else pulling at your time.
It rarely feels like progress in the moment. It only looks like progress when you glance back.
Screen free does not mean screen never. It means screen less, and more of you and your child, present with each other, even in small pockets of time.
Share Your Week One Story
We would love to hear how your first week went.
What worked, what surprised you, what you are trying differently in week two? Your story might be exactly what another parent in this community needs to read.
Five more weeks to go before third term resumes for most schools.
You are doing better than you think, mama.
