Easing Colds & Coughs
Little ones can catch many colds a year as their immune systems grow. Most clear up on their own, these gentle measures make them more comfortable while they recover.
Quick soothers
- Saline drops for blocked noses
- Extra fluids
- Humid air / steamy bathroom
- Honey for over-1s (never under 1)
Clear the nose
Saline nasal drops help loosen mucus, especially before feeds and sleep. For babies, a nasal aspirator afterwards can clear things gently.
Moisten the air
Sitting in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes, or a cool-mist humidifier in the bedroom, can ease congestion and a tickly cough.
Soothe the cough
For children over 1, a small spoon of honey can soothe a cough. Never give honey to babies under 12 months. Keep fluids up to thin mucus.
When to see a doctor
- Breathing that's fast, laboured, or wheezy
- A cough lasting more than 3 weeks
- High fever, or refusing to drink
- A baby under 3 months with cold symptoms
