Settling Tummy Upsets

Wind, colic and tummy troubles are common in the early months. Most ease with time, these gentle techniques can bring comfort in the meantime.

Quick soothers

  • Regular winding after feeds
  • Tummy time when awake
  • Gentle tummy massage
  • Warmth and rhythmic movement

Wind well

Hold your baby upright and gently pat or rub their back after feeds to release trapped wind. Take feeding breaks to wind if they seem uncomfortable.

Gentle movement

Lay your baby on their back and gently cycle their legs, or try a soft clockwise tummy massage, to help move trapped wind along.

Comfort and calm

Warmth, gentle rocking and skin-to-skin can soothe a colicky baby. Colic is exhausting, remember it's not your fault, and it does pass.

When to see a doctor

  • Vomiting that is green, forceful, or persistent
  • Blood in stool, or a swollen, hard tummy
  • Signs of dehydration or refusing feeds
  • Inconsolable crying that worries you, always get it checked
